June 12: US National Loving Day
You’ve probably heard that June is the most loved month for couples. Ofcourse because of Mythology. But did you know that today June 12 aside from commemorating Philippine National Independence Day, today is US “ National Loving Day”. As the name suggests, the holiday is definitely all about spreading love regardless of ethnicity and race to be specific. I gave emphasis to those words as there is an interesting love story behind this celebration.
It all started when the couples named Richard and Mildred Loving won against the United States’ law that considered “ Interracial Marriage” illegal after they were arrested by authorities as guilty of the said crime.
Richard and Mildred Loving, an interracial couple were so inlove with each other since childhood. Their love blossomed as they matured. Suddenly, their friendship developed into love that Richard decided to marry Mildred on her 18th birthday in the year 1958 in Virginia.
The couple pursued legal action when they moved to Washington D.C by writing a plea to Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy. The case was forwarded to the American Civil Liberties Union and, eventually, the ruling was in the Lovings’ favor. So they lived in peace and were blessed with three children.
Soon after the United States passed the Surpreme Court’s 1967 decision to strike down laws in several states that banned interracial marriage.
Richard and Mildred’s strong love devotion inspired the lives of millions of American couples, thus started the “ National Loving Day”
