June 12, 2022: Philippines Independence Day
On this day, 12th of June we Filipinos are celebrating our 124th year of National Independence Day from Spanish rule that lasted for over 300 years. It was on this date when Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo unfurled the Philippine flag for the first time in the year 1898. But it wasn't until 1962 that President Diosdado Macapagal made it a public holiday through a presidential proclamation.
Did you know that the Philippines has two independence days?
June 12 and July 4. June 12 is the one that is widely recognized as it was the day that we broke free from Spaniards. There was a bloodbath battle before we had our independence.
However, American forces occupied our country until July 4 1946. That's why we have two special dates.
But Filipinos recognize June 12 as the rightful day of our independence.
Let me share a glimpse in the Philippine history. Enjoy!
