Back in the 1980s, the cirl bunting population in the UK dropped dramaticallyādown to just a few hundred pairs, mostly in South Devon. The species was at serious risk of disappearing entirely from the country.

Thanks to coordinated conservation efforts led by organizations like the RSPB, alongside local farmers and environmental groups, things began to change:
Farmers were encouraged to adopt wildlife-friendly practices, such as leaving winter stubble fields for feeding.
Habitats were restored and protected.
