On June 4, 2025, asteroid 2025 KX8—a 120-foot-wide space rock approximately the size of a small airplane—made a safe but relatively close flyby of Earth. Traveling at high speed, it passed within approximately 1.99 million kilometers (1.24 million miles) of our planet, a distance considered close in astronomical terms but posing no threat to Earth.
Belonging to the Aten group of near-Earth objects, which have orbits that cross Earth's path around the sun, 2025 KX8's trajectory was closely monitored by NASA and other space agencies. Despite its proximity, it did not meet the criteria for a "potentially hazardous" asteroid, which requires an object to be over 150 meters in diameter and come within 7.4 million kilometers of Earth.
This event underscores the importance of vigilant monitoring of near-Earth objects. NASA's Asteroid Watch Dashboard and the Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System (ATLAS) play crucial roles in detecting and tracking such objects, enhancing our preparedness for any potential future threats.
